PEC Challenge: Beckman's Deli

After a disastrous PEC last Friday, I was eager to wash away the sins of the heat lamp and try a known classic from NJ.com's top 33 Pork Roll list.  Today, I ventured down to Belmar before it's completely overrun with Bennies, to try Beckman's Deli.  Do people still take the train to the beach like it's 1920? If you do, Beckman's is the perfect spot to stop on your way from the Belmar train station towards the beach.  Or if you wake up at the Belmar Motor Lodge because you missed the last train home after a wild night at Bar A (like I did, during the Pre-Uber Days), Beckman's Deli should be your go-to.  I really loved this place, not only for it's "shore town" vibes but they also sold commemorative Pork Roll T-Shirts.  AND. If that's not enough for you, the storefront deli also doubles as a cigar shop.  Talk about convenience.  This place has been a staple in Belmar for years and you can tell because their PEC's were awesome and I think they might know it.

I also have a very exciting programming alert.  As you might know (my first email address was marchmadman40), I LOVE this time of year.  Thanks to a suggestion from my friend, Mike, who I'm still not calling Big Mike, I will be holding our first Annual Pork Roll Tournament.  That's right, 64 teams, single elimination.  All you need to do is follow me on Twitter on @ElJefeGarrido starting next week to vote on the best Pork Roll I've had during the 2019-2020 season.  The bracket will be revealed this Sunday, and voting will begin Monday, March 9th.  Don't miss out on voting for your favorite!

Bread Rating: 8.4/10. (A toasted roll that had the perfect toast on the outside and soft pillowy inside.)

Pork Roll Rating: 9.1/10 (Four slices of the greatest breakfast meat known to man. Not overheated but still hot. Melted cheese in between each slice. Years of pork rolls past on the griddle with each bite.)

Egg Rating: 8.7/10 (Perfect amount of egg to complement the pork roll, fried and at the bottom of the sandwich.)

Cheese Rating: 7.7/10 (Yellow American but it was the real stuff. Melting in between each pork roll slice was a veteran move.)

Sandwich Composition: 8.4/10 (Good SPK placement. A lot of movement with the meat since it was so stuffed but there was a ton of good flavor here and in the end even with all the sliding didn’t make a mess.)

Overall: 8.5/10 (A true veteran in the pec game, this spot just felt it's been there forever and in all the best ways.)

Price: $6, cash

Beckman's Deli is located at 704 10th Ave, Belmar, NJ 07719
