Taliercio's Challenge: The Big Apple

I did my last Taliercio's sandwich four weeks ago in a world that looked a lot different than it does today.  With Taliercio's offering curbside and delivery service throughout our statewide "stay at home" order, I'm going to try to maintain some sort of "normalcy" as we all go through this together.  Obviously, I won't be able to travel for pork rolls, so once our PEC Tournament is over next week, I'll be posting strictly Taliercio's sandwiches until we're (hopefully soon) out of the woods on this Coronavirus shit.  I had this grilled cheese planned for St. Patrick's Day two weeks ago since it includes corned beef and to celebrate New York's rich Irish-American history.  Since I'm contractually obligated to eat corned beef only in March I couldn't let another day pass before I got this grilled cheese.  In reality, this grilled cheese was more like a Reuben sandwich without the Russian dressing (The Mel Brooks panini has the Russian dressing).  The Reuben sandwich draws its origin from Arnold Reuben the owner of Reuben's Delicatessen which opened in 1908 at 802 Park Ave (but moved several times throughout its history).

The Big Apple: Corned Beef, Pastrami, Swiss, Sauerkraut

So what's in a Reuben.  Simple.  Corned Beef, Swiss, Sauerkraut, and Russian Dressing.  The Big Apple grilled cheese (like most of the other city-themed grilled cheeses), is a variance of New York's most famous sandwich by adding in Pastrami at the expense of the Russian dressing.  Without the dressing, I found this grilled cheese a bit plain, with only the sauerkraut cutting the flavor of the meats and swiss.  Not a huge deal because this grilled cheese was still good, just put it beneath the Mel Brooks in the rankings.  Seeing as though New York is our closest city on the list of grilled cheese cities, it should come as no surprise that this is likely the most "authentic" of the grilled cheese sandwiches from Taliercio's but please when you come to visit don't call it The Big Apple.

Overall: 7.1/10

For all of you following along with our PEC Tournament, here are the results from our Sweet Sixteen round.  Elite Eight voting will take place tomorrow!

#1 Johnny Pork Roll (51%) def. #12 Gem's Middletown (49%)

Gem's Cinderella run has been cut short by one vote but not before giving a big-time scare to #1 seed Johnny Pork Roll.

#3 Inbetween Cafe (68.1%) def. #2 Bagelmasters (31.9%)

Inbetween Cafe and their buttered poppy roll move on over local favorite Bagelmasters.  This sets up a very appropriate Red Bank Green final between Johnny Pork Roll and Inbetween Cafe for a trip to the Final Four.

#1 Fairwinds Deli (61.8%) def. #4 Brennan's Rumson (38.2%)

A huge contingent of Fair Haven voters came out in support of Fairwinds Deli which will make them a very tough out in the coming rounds.

#15 Brennan's Middletown (74.5%) def. #3 Allenwood General Store (25.5%)

Can Brennan's Middletown avenge their sister store's defeat against Fairwinds Deli in the Elite Eight? Fairwinds might have an easy shot at the Final Four.

#1 Big Mike's Red Store (58.8%) def. #4 Grandma's Bagels (41.2%)

A close matchup on Instagram turned into a comfortable win for Big Mike's on the blog poll who will need to defeat one more bagel shop to make it to the Final Four.

#7 D'Alessio's (57.1%) def. #3 Joyce's (42.9%)

The Lincroft faithful did not show up for Joyce's who are bounced in an upset.  D'Alessio's will now go up against Big Mike's Red Store.

#1 Summit Diner (57.4%) def. #4 Fredy Jeremy (42.6%)

Fredy Jeremy put up a great fight against Summit Diner who will now face out of state Cinderella Bethesda Bagels in an Elite Eight matchup.

#14 Bethesda Bagels (72.9%) def. Better Bagels Boston (27.1%)

An easy victory for Bethesda Bagels who will now face arguably their first real competition in the tournament, Summit Diner.
